Even though there are millions of people around the world that have been diagnosed with psoriasis, it is still somewhat a mystery to doctors, scientists and researchers. However, what we do know, is that psoriasis is a genetic disorder that effects the immune system and is not a bacteria, nor is it contagious. In the recent years there have been new treatments for psoriasis developed, such as light treatments, oral medications, and even medication that is composed of living organisms, known as biologics.

Biologics is very special in comparison to the other treatments available for psoriasis, because it actually works against the disorder by stunting its growth in early stages. Biologics is used in people who have mild to sever psoriasis and even people who have arthritis as well. This is one of the best options for a person that is suffering from psoriasis but has not been able to be successful with other treatments.

Then there are the topical and systemic treatments that can only work for a certain period of time. If the psoriasis is extremely severe then ultra violet light therapy, also known as phototherapy, is used. Phototherapy is done by exposing areas of the skin to ultraviolet light under the supervision of doctors. It has been proven to be effective against psoriasis in multiple studies.

There are also natural methods that can help you fight psoriasis, such as the omega-3 fatty acids. A good way to get a lot of omega-3 fatty acids in your system is to eat a lot of salmon. If you do not like salmon the you can take an omega-3 fish oil supplement pill with some water. Aside from helping with psoriasis, omega-3 is also great for the heart and has anti-aging properties as well. Everyone should take fish oil, even if they are already healthy.

Sunless tanning is a tan achieved by special chemical substances. These substances act one of two ways – they either force the skin to produce more melanin pigment or they saturate the dead skin cells of the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin) and color its proteins brown.

Nowadays sunless tanning means are divided into 2 main categories – external and internal means. External means (lotions etc.) use Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) as their active ingredient. In the 1970s Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) was added by the FDA to its list of safe cosmetic ingredients, and it is still on that list. The internal means (tanning pills etc.) contain beta carotene or canthaxanthin – the ingredients which were banned by the FDA many years ago due to being unsafe.

The main advantages of sunless tanning include:
- You can achieve the tan in several hours after applying sunless tanner onto your skin. This eliminates the need of taking weeks or even months to achieve a nice tan.
- Modern sunless tanners give you a completely naturally looking tan. You just want to make sure (by reading what other users say) that the tan will be of a brown, and not orange-shade brown color.
- Sunless tanning will not give you tan lines – you can apply them in private all over your body.
- You will achieve a nice tan even if you are a person with fair skin due to which your skin does not produce much melanin (pigment that gives skin the pink, brown or black color)
- Sunless tan is a temporary tan – it will disappear in about a 5-7 day course of time.

There are people that are actually obsessed with their tan. They can not picture themselves without having a tan. If those people want to keep their skin looking younger for years to come they should opt to use sunless tanning instead of tanning in the sun.

What about people with psoriasis? Will they benefit or not from the use of sunless tanners?

There is no information about the sunless tanning helping to treat psoriasis. But there is information that some people with psoriasis say sunless tanning helps them to feel better about their skin and they started wearing shorts and short sleeved shirts in the summer. This happens due to that sunless tanning makes your skin brown which makes the red psoriatic lesions much less noticeable than if they were on a pale skin.

It is probably more comfortable to apply sunless tanning means with the use of special tanning towels saturated with the tanning lotion. After you wipe your body with such towels and rub the tanning lotion into your skin, the tan will start appearing in about 1 hour. First it may look red or orange. But within a few more hours the orange nuance should disappear and the tan will turn brown.

Scaly psoriatic lesions may also first appear orange but after you shower (in about 24 hours of the achieving of the tan) these scales will be gone.

You may want to shower right before you apply the tanning lotion because after applying of the lotion it is not recommended to take a shower or even to sweat (like with exercises) for about a 24 hour period.

Sunless tan will usually last for about 5-7 days and then disappear. Tiny remainders may stay for up to 2 weeks.

Most people with psoriasis that have tried sunless tanning did not experience any inflammation nor blocked or clogged pores. However, some people with psoriasis noticed that a sunless tanning lotion can block skin pores and dry up psoriatic scales, making them look flakier.

If the case is severe then the itching may become so extreme that it begins to burn and sting! If you scratch the rash then it may become infected and require immediate medical care. It is causing these rashes because the body is producing too many skin cells too rapidly, and they begin to pile up on top of each other. When this happens, it creates a perfect environment for rash causing bacteria to grow. If you do not treat your psoriasis then you can expect it to get worse as time goes on.

A good natural method for you to use against psoriasis is omega-3 fish oil. You can find this in salmon, or if you don;t like salmon, you can simply use a supplemental omega-3 pill, sold in many health stores and even grocery stores. Aside from helping your psoriasis it is also good for your heart and it has anti-aging properties as well.

You should also go and see a doctor and get prescribed an ointment or lotion that is made especially for psoriasis. If the case is severe you should also ask your doctor about systematic treatments. Systematic treatments are provided through pills and injections. You can also go in for ultraviolet light therapy, This has also been proven to be effective for people with psoriasis.

Try to watch your diet as well, and drink lots of water. Eating plenty of fruits and vegetables will help with your psoriasis too, and you should always make sure you get enough nutrition, regardless of whether or not you have psoriasis.

There are lots of treatments for psoriasis available today, including ointments and lotions that are designed to help you with the condition of psoriasis. Many people are unaware however, that there are 100% natural and effective methods of curing psoriasis. Most people just assume they should take the medication prescribed by a doctor, and if that doesn’t work then they just give up. The truth is, you may just have better results with a natural cure than you did with medication.

If you have ever heard the old story that using olive oil will clear your skin of rashes, then you probably won’t be shocked at the first method to heal your rashes. Oregano oil, is a proven way to reduce the itchiness associated with psoriasis, and it will even help your psoriasis clear up as well. The reason why this oil does this, is because it contains anti fungal and anti bacterial properties, which will ultimately clear your skin up effectively.

Another herb that is used in cooking is Turmeric. Many people make Turmeric into a paste and then rub it into their skin to clear up rashes and clear multiple skin problems. Even if you do not have psoriasis, you can still use turmeric to heal just about any infection. In fact, turmeric is known to heal infections faster than any other antiseptic on the market. If you have any kind of infection whatsoever, I would recommend you try using turmeric before spending time and money on medications that could have serious negative side effects on some people.

There are more natural cures than just these, and many of them are more effective than their chemical counterparts. Many people have seen good results with natural methods, and I would recommend you use them before trying and medication. If you find that none of the natural methods are working for you because your case is too sever, then you should see a doctor immediately. Severe psoriasis can be deadly if untreated, because of the spread of infection. Severe psoriasis can cause an itch so furious, that it is almost impossible to not scratch it. Once you scratch it, you open up a wound that could allow infection to set in, at which point the infection can go into your blood stream and then to your heart. This is how someone could die from psoriasis.

If you would like to find out more about healing psoriasis and many natural solutions, then you should read the free articles on this site. I am sure you will find a lot of helpful info here, and I hope we can help you get rid of your psoriasis problems for good.

Psoriasis treatment comes in all forms of pills and potions. Just take a look on the Internet and you will find thousands. The Doctors will prescribe all manner of things of things to stop the itching and the aches and pains, and for the skin that feels like sand paper.

On reading different articles about people who suffer with Psoriasis it seems as thou the picture from the Doctors is one of caution, and it’s almost like they are saying that psoriasis is one of those things you will have to put up with for the rest of your life. For the patient this must be terrible making them want to pull their hair out with frustration.

The idea behind this article is to tell you about a different approach to curing Psoriasis so that the patient can have psoriasis free life.

This natural psoriasis treatment all started with medical research over a decade ago. They decided that they were missing something with the regard to all the diseases that were not being cured by traditional medicine.

With the influx of more people becoming obese, and then in turn more people were becoming ill it was a natural thing to think that it was the actual diets of people that were causing the problems in the first place.

Then it was a simple process of breaking down just what people had been eating and to find what and why things were going wrong. The first thing they noticed was the fact that the acidic content of the food was stopping the normal healing process. Knowing that the human body is a remarkable machine, and that in most cases it could heal itself if the patient was to turn their acidic food into an alkaline one then perhaps they had the answer.

In a natural progression the body would have to under go a complete change and after a simple detox the treatment could begin. Over the next few years the results were very good and the symptoms of many diseases were reversed to enable people to live normally again.

Psoriasis type vulgaris can be recognized by the presence of raised, red, scaly patches or “plaques”, usually on the elbows, knees, scalp, chest, nails, and lower back.

Psoriasis Guttate

Guttate often appears after someone suffers from strep throat a throat infection caused by streptococcus bacteria. It presents as small red dots of psoriasis that usually appear on the trunk, arms, and legs; the lesions may have some scale.

Guttate is fairly easy to differentiate from plaque psoriasis because the spots caused by the guttate type are much smaller.

Pustular

Psoriasis types pustular is extremely rare, and more severe. Localized pustular can be quite painful, making it difficult to use your hands or walk normally.

Due to its location on the hands and feet, localized pustular may require the use of gloves or plastic wrapping during conventional treatment with topical creams.

Pustular may erupt as the first occurrence of psoriasis or it may evolve from plaque psoriasis It appears as small, white, fluid-filled blisters pustules surrounded by swollen, reddish skin and can cover the entire body and result in fever, fluid imbalances, and infection.

Inverse

Inverse Psoriasis also referred to as “flexural,” “genital,” or “skin-fold” psoriasis, inverse is uncommon and looks different from other forms because thick scales don’t develop. Inverse psoriasis can be found in the armpits, groin, under the breasts and in other flexion creases skin folds such as those around the genitals and buttocks.

Inverse is more frequent and severe in people who are overweight because it is in the skin folds where it is particularly prone to irritation from rubbing and sweating.

This form of psoriasis appears as smooth, dry areas of skin that are red and inflamed but do not have the scaling associated with plaque psoriasis the most common type of psoriasis.

Psoriasis treatment at home can help control this skin disorder. Here are some tips and strategies for psoriasis:

* Moisturizers and certain creams along with a nice warm bath will keep the skin saturated with moisture.

* Make sure to get some natural “heliotherapy”. A.K.A. “sunlight exposure. Do not overdue this because of harmful rays but a little bit every day is ok.

* Carefully take the crusty scabs off by applying cream. Remember to first soak the scabs in the cream for some time. Allow it to soften and gently try and remove dry skin without irritating the psoriasis.

* Sometimes it may be important to try different ointments. Some work better than others. Experiment. Aloe Vera is a known natural moisturizer that helps with this.

You do not want to use creams that may flare up your psoriasis. Things to avoid include:

Anxiety and Stress. These two are almost guaranteed to make psoriasis worse or even cause it to flare up again. Monitor this carefully.

* Having infections can cause this skin irritation to worsen.

Certain prescription medications have been known to make psoriasis symptoms worse. Some known are: NSIDs, lithium, and beta-blockers. Make sure you consult with your doctor when taking a different medication.

Smoking and Alcohol consumption. We all know that smoking is already horrible for you and too much drinking does the body no good. One word for you if you already have severe psoriasis: “Quit”.

There have been many testimonials and studies regarding eliminating certain foods from the diet which can have a dramatic impact on getting rid of psoriasis. Do some research on this and try different diets.

Psoriasis is an inflammatory autoimmune skin condition that is non-contagious and chronic. During the earlier times, medical practitioners believe that psoriasis is a variety of leprosy, mainly because of its scaly appearance. It is one of the most ancient human diseases known to mankind. Incidentally, psoriasis has been greatly misunderstood over the years. Scholars eventually paid much attention to this skin disorder, yet to this day – no cure was found.

Psoriasis manifests itself when the immune system sends out faulty signals that causes the growth cycles to speed up. It is reported that between 10 and 30 percent of people who have had psoriasis get a related form of arthritis. It is for this very reason that the skin disorder is immediately and properly treated.

Note: Psoriatic arthritis is the related form of arthritis. As the name suggests, psoriatic arthritis is the inflammation of the joints.

Psoriasis come in five types, each having unique signs and symptoms. The five types are plaque, guttate, inverse, pustular and erythrodermic. Among these five, plaque psoriasis is the most common. Plaque appears as raised, red patches or lesions covered by a silvery-white buildup of dead skin cells called scale. Usually, the plaques are formed on the elbows and knees as well as the lower back and scalp. However, the plaques can also manifest themselves on any part of the body. About 80% of people who develop psoriasis have plaque psoriasis. The other 20% have any of the other types. Guttate psoriasis appears as small, red spots on the skin. Inverse psoriasis manifests itself as smooth, red lesions formed in skin folds. Pustular psoriasis, on the other hand, appears as white pustules surrounded by red skin, while erythrodermic psoriasis causes widespread redness with severe itching and pain.

People must be aware that anyone may have psoriasis. It can come about on random parts of the body. Regardless of the type, psoriasis causes discomfort to a person. Aside from the stubborn itch on the skin, it may also crack and bleed. Severe cases of psoriasis, which are manifested through excessive itching and discomfort, may cause a person to be up all night and the pain that one has to endure can make everyday ordinary tasks difficult. In addition to that, psoriasis is associated with other serious health problems such as heart disease, depression and diabetes, to name a few.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease. That means that it is a lifelong condition that people who have already developed them would often experience flares and remissions all throughout their life. Currently, psoriasis has no cure. There are, however, many different treatments that are available. There are varying treatment for the severity and type of psoriasis. The ones that do not cause too much discomfort may be treated at home while those who develop such severe psoriasis may require to be treated in the hospital or medical facility.

There is good news to those who are advocates of herbal skin care. Psoriasis can be treated naturally. The listed Psoriasis natural treatment below are studied by the medical community. Also, these natural options are reported effective by members of various psoriasis foundations:

1. Apple cider vinegar – It has been documented that, throughout history, many cultures have made use of different types of vinegar for medical purposes. Apple cider vinegar, for one, has been used for many years as a cleanser, disinfectant or soothing agent. According to some people who have had psoriasis, apple cider vinegar helps treat the skin disorder. The vinegar may be applied directly on the skin, added to the bath, mixed with a moisturizer or have their infected body parts soaked on it.

2. Capsaicin – Capsaicin is an ingredient contained in cayenne peppers. Some studies have shown that capsaicin is an effective way to treat psoriasis by reducing the redness, scaling and itching on the skin. Short-live burning sensation, however, is the only side effect.

3. Oats – Oat extracts have been used for centuries as a soothing agent for a number of skin conditions. Oat plant derivatives can be used as treatment for psoriasis as well as other dry and itchy skin conditions. People who have psoriasis may make their own oatmeal bath to get rid of the skin disorder.

4. Tea tree oil – Tea tree oil is known for its antibacterial and antiseptic properties and was used in surgery and dentistry as early as the 1920’s. Today, like aloe vera, many products have tea tree oil as an active ingredient. Tea tree oil, according to some members of psoriasis foundation, is an effective way to treat psoriasis, especially those that form on the scalp.

Whatever the type and severity, psoriasis can affect a person’s quality of life. As already stated, psoriasis is a lifelong condition that poses physical and emotional challenges to an individual. The good news is, members of the medical community and psoriasis foundations are constantly looking for cure for this skin condition. There are now several therapies that have emerged, and it has been reported that more people are experiencing significant improvements to their condition.

If you have Psoriasis or any other skin problem, I know you are always looking for a solution. With psoriasis, the skin breaks out in itchy rashes, unsightly blemishes, and white flakes.

In psoriasis, the skin cells multiply quickly causing rashes to appear quickly. Normal skin renews itself in 30 days, but in psoriasis, skin cells move from the innermost layer of skin to the skin surface in 3 days, causing red and itchy areas. In addition, as cells accumulate on the surface they die, turning white and flaky.

Finding a psoriasis treatment that cures is not easy since there doesn’t appear to be one. Most doctors or dermatologists do not know what causes psoriasis and consider it incurable. But there are many different natural remedies that can give some relief to psoriasis but at far as a natural psoriasis treatment that is a cure, there is none.

Here is a list of psoriasis treatments that you may want to try.

Give your skin some sun to give your body additional energy and Vitamin D to fight your psoriasis. You can add Vitamin D supplements to the list of vitamins you take. The psoriasis sun treatment works better with UVB rays but these rays also cause sunburn. So you may want to put sunscreen on those areas that do not have psoriasis.

Drink teas or take capsules of sarsaparilla, milk thistle or nettle leaves.

Take a regular dose of fish oil or flax seed. Start with 1500 mg per day of fish oil

Use a couple tablespoons of granular lecithin. You can add it to your soups, salads, morning cereal, or smoothes. Never add it to boiling water or use it as cooking oil since it oxidizes rapidly and becomes rancid.

Take large dose of inositol, a B vitamin, around 1.5 grams or more and see how it affects your psoriasis.

Use a diluted apple cider vinegar over your psoriasis to reduce itching. Start with 10 parts apple cider vinegar to 90 part of distilled water. No known pathogen can survive in apple cider vinegar.

Keep stress down if possible, stress lowers the immune system and a weak immune system cannot keep up with the activity of psoriasis.

There is another herb that appears to be an excellent psoriasis treatment. It’s called mahonia quifolium and is better known as Oregon grape or holly-leaved barberry, which is a natural plant extract

This extract is,

-A strong antibacterial

-A strong antifungal

-Inhibits the excessive abnormal skin cell growth

-Reduces inflammation

-Activates the release of histamine

You can find mahonia aquifolium in a product called M-Folia. This product comes in various forms – ointments, shampoos, sunscreen, and cream preparations

Keep your psoriasis area open to air and don’t allow jewelry or tight clothing to press against it. Stay of away from harsh chemicals sprays and liquid irritants.

Keep stress down if possible, stress lowers the immune system and a weak immune system cannot keep up with the activity of psoriasis.

Use a psoriasis treatment as mentioned above to help give you psoriasis relief. You can use a combination of these remedies, so experiment to see which works the best for you.

Known to be a serious skin inflammation, psoriasis is described as an autoimmune and non-contagious disease that affects both skin and the body joints. A person suffering from this skin problem develops red color scaly patches all over, which is considered the main symptom or cause of this inflammation called psoriasis.

According to several medical reports published in popular magazines from time to time it has become evident that this skin problem is a choric one, affecting more than 2 to 3 % of the entire world population. A person suffering from this skin disease finds it very unpleasant to socialize. Rashes and lesions develop all over the affected areas increasing the pain of the sufferer.

Now psoriasis can be of different forms and depending on the severity of your situation medical treatments are ensured by experts. Most common types include inverse psoriasis, psoriasis vulgaris, pustular psoriasis, quttate psoriasis and so on. Despite several medical researches, the actual cause of psoriasis still remains unknown. Doctors suggest that there are combinations of several factors that include both environmental and hereditary inclination to be more likely responsible for the cause of this particular skin problem.

If you are the one suffering from psoriasis, now you can easily examine those affected areas by doing some internet search. Today, Internet is the main means to make yourself aware of your surroundings and also to keep yourself updated on several important events. In the following lines, you will come across some of the most common symptoms of psoriasis that will help you to judge your own situation.

• First and the most common symptom is the itching and burning sensation in all those affected areas. Many people who suffer from this skin inflammation get lesions and scaly skin causing in skin cracks and flakes as the skin gets dry. The main affected areas of the body include elbow, feet, scalp, knees, ears and palm. Areas like buttocks and breasts also get affected and bleeding lesions in this situation is also common.

• Moist areas of the body are likely to get affected first like the areas between naval and the buttocks. Symptoms of psoriasis detected in critical areas for instance in between buttocks and penis can cause severe pain for a person.

Psoriasis is a very bad skin condition if it flares severely. Only the patient knows what he/she is undergoing. There is no way to share the trauma of skin falling and itching. The application of medication tires the patient after some time. One wants to run away from it but cannot. How to get relief from psoriasis? Let us talk about it.

Psoriasis- acceptance

To accept that I have psoriasis and it will not go away for my lifetime is the first step. When we get stressed, we trigger more of psoriasis. Better to keep calm. Let psoriasis be there on the body. Try to take attention away from it. Use the medicines as directed and stop worrying about it. Asking repeatedly- why me, will not help. Everyone has some pain. We have psoriasis. Let us accept it. If you suffer from psoriasis, you must have experienced that when psoriasis flares up, you get mentally disturbed. It beats us in both the directions. But we have to conquer it. The only way is to surrender to it without any resistance.

Psoriasis- think of other things

Thinking of Psoriasis will be of no help. That does not cure it. That worsens it. Better to think of other things in life. Try to achieve goals and love. Try to love others. Make life better. There is no other way out of a disease, which will be a lifelong companion. Make friends with it, because it will never leave you.

Psoriasis- medication

Many of us get very disheartened after trying many medications. We find that psoriasis returns. Some of the treatments are very troublesome and messy. Others have side effects. We get tired of medicines. Many of us search for alternatives to modern medicine. But after trying every possibility, we conclude that nothing works. It only tires us more. Better to talk to your doctor about this and use only few medicines. Accept whatever relief they give and continue with life as cheerfully as possible. This Psoriasis quiz will help you learn more about it – http://www.doctorgoodskin.com/ds/psoriasis/psoriasis-quiz.php

There are different treatments available to help control psoriasis. Treatment depends on the kind of psoriasis and no single treatment works for everyone.

Topical creams, ointments and powders, applied to the skin are the most common forms of treatment for psoriasis. They slow down or normalize excessive cell production and reduce inflammation. Anthralin, Dovonex, Salicyclic acid, corticosteriods and coal tar are common topical treatments.

Corticosteroids are often prescribed for the treatment of psoriasis. These steroids are anti-inflammatory agents and reduce the swelling and redness of lesions. Corticosteriods complement other psoriasis treatments that are used to treat chronic cases. Patients must use topical steroids properly to avoid unnecessary side effects. Some steroids are suitable for only short periods of time or may be applied only to certain areas of the skin.

When psoriasis is extensive then ultraviolet light treatment or phototherapy is used on patients. Phototherapy involves exposure of the skin to wavelengths of ultraviolet light under medical supervision. Ultraviolet light B (UVB) is an effective form of ultraviolet radiation for treating psoriasis. It is present in natural sunlight and penetrates the skin. UVB slows the abnormally rapid growth of skin cells associated with psoriasis. Treatment involves exposing the skin to an artificial UVB light source over a set period of time.

Systemic medications or prescription medications are administered to patients with moderate to severe psoriasis. Biologic drugs that are made from living human or animal proteins help block or eliminate various immune system cells that cause psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Other systemic medications like cyclosporine, methotrexate, soriatane, Accutane and sulfasalazine are also used to treat chronic cases of psoriasis.

Popularity amongst patients of alternative therapies like acupuncture, herbal remedies and magnets have grown. 36 percent of adults in the United States use some form of alternative and complementary medicine to counter psoriasis.

Over the years, patients have tried different diet regimens. The turkey diet, low-protein diet and the rice diet are common among them. Response to treatment depends on individual habits and medical histories and therefore varies from patient to patient. Over a period of time, patients begin to respond to the right treatment.

It is a fact proven by the medical field that sunlight does have a healing effect on psoriasis. But a person with this skin condition can’t lay out in the sun for prolonged periods just to cure the disease-there is too much of a risk for skin cancer as well as aging and burning of the skin. These ultraviolet rays must come in some controlled form. That form could be psoriasis lamps. These handy devices have been effective in lessening the presence of psoriasis patches on the skin.

These lamps have become prevalent in use both in clinics or doctor’s offices and in your own home. It is a convenient form of treatment to use in the winter months when your body is not getting many natural ultraviolet rays from the sunshine.

Psoriasis lamps supply you with the light therapy that your affected skin needs. You will usually be using the lamps four or five days per week. This treatment can last for a period of up to three months. To get the ultimate degree of satisfaction from our ultraviolet treatment you can combine the treatment with the medication, acitretin (this is of the retinoid category of drugs). You can also use the lamp together with a medicine called psoralen also used in the treatment of psoriasis.

There is a newer version of psoriasis lamps that modern technology has brought into existence. This psoriasis lamp makes use of laser therapy. This method allows for you to directly point the light beam to a particular area of the skin—thus providing more effective treatment. With the use of this type of lamp comes a smaller amount of side effects and a lesser amount of treatments.

There is an effective lamp on the market called the Sperti Phototherapy Psoriasis Lamp. This lamp offers a timer that you can adjust yourself and a high energy capacity. It has a Mercury Vapor Lamp that gives off UVB and UVA. This lamp is approved by the FDA. It does come with a table and a floor stand and it folds for easy storage. It runs on 110V AC (standard) and it comes with eyewear that blocks ultraviolet rays from the person being treated and anyone else in the room.

Remember that any of the psoriasis lamps that are approved by the food and Drug Administration and are deemed as medical devices by the experts in that field must be bought with a doctor’s prescription. Furthermore, these lamps must be used only under the professional advice of a physician. Do not attempt to use them without any advice-you could truly injure yourself.

Let’s not overlook the fact that these psoriasis lamps do come with risks as do all devices of this type. When you begin to treat your psoriasis condition, see that you do not overexpose your skin to these harmful ultraviolet rays. Bear in mind that they are just like the sun’s rays and can produce the same skin conditions as too much of the sun’s rays-cancer, burning, and other skin problems. Also let your physician know about all medications you are taking. You may be using a drug that will magnify the light ray impact on your skin. Stay in touch with your doctor and take proper care.

When looking for an effective natural treatment for psoriasis, look no further than the Oregon grape. You may not have heard of this extraordinary herb that is now being touted as a safe and extremely successful treatment for mild to moderate psoriasis. What exactly is the Oregon grape and why all the hype?

The Oregon Grape (mahonia aquifolium) is not really a grape, but an evergreen shrub that gets clusters of purple berries, the color and appearance of which look a little like grapes. The berries are edible, although quite bitter in taste and usually have to be sweetened to make them palatable. The leaves of the plant look like holly and the flowers, which appear in late spring, are a beautiful yellow color. This attractive plant is native to the American northwest coast, from British Colombia to Northern California

The medicinal properties of the Oregon grape plant have long been known because it contains a high concentration of berberine. Berberine, found in the roots and bark, has been identified as having strong antioxidant, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties that make it beneficial in the treatment of skin diseases such as psoriasis, eczema and acne as well as for athlete’s foot and other fungal infections. It has even been suggested that berberine may help prevent heart disease by lowering cholesterol levels. All these benefits are not mere hearsay: several scientific studies have clearly shown that berberine has the ability to protect the body against cell damage, to slow down the rate of abnormal growth and to reduce inflammation.

However, three recent clinical trials have really proven that the Oregon grape is a viable treatment alternative for psoriasis. In one trial the group of patients using 10% concentration in a cream base had significantly greater benefits than the patients in the placebo group. Another study found that using it topically for 12 weeks improved the symptoms in a high percentage of the group, whilst yet another study found that using Oregon grape was more beneficial than the standard treatment. It has therefore been concluded that it is a safe and effective treatment for mild to moderate psoriasis.

Oregon grape can be used in several ways, such as tinctures, creams, ointments and teas. The mounting empirical evidence suggests that taking a tincture internally combined with a cream and ointment is an extremely effective treatment for psoriasis. It is important to note that even though a standard dosage has not been established, it has been found that Oregon grape can cause diarrhea and other symptoms if taken in too high a dose. It is also not suitable for pregnant women because evidence has shown that it can cause uterine contractions in animals.

If you are looking for an effective natural treatment for psoriasis, the Oregon Grape seems to be a great choice. Not only has it been scientifically proven to successfully treat psoriasis, but it’s safe to use with very few side-effects.

This article addresses the most common questions about it: -

‘What is it?’

‘What causes it?’

‘Can you catch it from someone who has it?’ and

‘Is there a cure?’

1. Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition.
While it’s not life-threatening, it can be very severe and disabling. It often appears between the ages of 15 and 35 but it can develop at any age. As many as 15 per cent contract psoriasis before their tenth birthday and it occurs nearly equally in men and women.

There are five types of psoriasis but the most common form, plaque psoriasis, appears as raised, red patches or lesions covered with a silvery white build-up of dead skin cells, called scale. Psoriasis can occur on any part of the body but typically on the scalp, elbows, knees, and the base of the back. However, it can develop anywhere, including the nails, palms, soles, genitals and face (which is rare). Strangely, the patches of white skin often show up on the same place on each side of the body.

2. The causes of psoriasis are still unknown to us but it is believed to have a genetic component. Most professionals agree that the immune system is set off by mistake, which speeds up the growth cycle of skin cells. A normal skin cell matures and falls off within a month but a psoriatic skin cell takes only a few days to rise to the surface and then, instead of falling off, the cells accumulate and form the lesions.

3. It’s not contagious; you can’t ‘catch’ it and people who have it are no threat to other people but it is an embarrassing condition which as well as causing an itchy skin can have a psychological effect too, since it influences people’s readiness to let others see their skin. This not only can dictate what clothes can be worn or which social activities can be enjoyed but it can also make it difficult to mix with the opposite sex.

4. Regrettably, there is no cure but there are more and more treatments available which at least reduce the symptoms. People often need to try out different treatments before they find one that works for them.

Diseases which affect the skin may seem relatively unimportant when compared with other conditions but it’s worth remembering that the skin is the largest organ in the body and it plays an important role in controlling body temperature and as a defence against infection. Large areas of psoriasis can lead to infection, loss of fluid and bad circulation.

So, is there hope for a cure?

Yes there is. Scientists are studying psoriasis more than ever before. They understand much more about its genetic causes and how it involves the immune system. Both the federal government and The National Psoriasis Foundation are funding research to discover the cause of psoriasis and to find a cure.
